Pinkbike Sick Threads T-shirt Contest - The Winners!

by Julian Coffey
Nov 2, 2010 at 21:59

It's 2am, and we're still sitting in front of the monitors with glazed eyes, sore backs and melted brains. This t-shirt contest has literally blown our minds with how epic the creative output on Pinkbike is. Picking 3 winners out of over 3000 entries was harder than we could have ever imagined.

We are STOKED to announce the winners...

The Pinkbike Sick Threads contest generated so many rad designs, that we couldn't stop at just 3. Yes we've chosen the top 3, but we've also picked an additional 9 designs - this means 12 sick t-shirt designs from the Pinkbike community will be screen printed and added to our 2011 line up!

The additional 9 winners will all receive a copy of Lifecycles on DVD, a $150 credit to spend in the Pinkbike store, and of course, 2 shirts with their design on them.

So without further ado, here are the top 3:

Way better in whose opinion? Everyone would pick something else, but at the end of the day the Pinkbike is giving away the prizes and it's up to them who will be rewarded.
Great job all of you winners! Congrats!

favs would have been the smartest idea to find out "whos opinion" because at the end of the day its the consumers opinion that matters. and us, being the consumers should have had a larger say i think.

no those did not fit the criteria. and im not saying that the one with the most favs should have one but i do believe that the ones with the most favs should have made up the finals. like maybe the top 10-15 shirts rather that top 300.

I think pinkbike should have had a vote from scratch on the finalists. so overall favs didnt matter, just the ones in the finals. or instead of favs, have a more 'official' voting system. just a thought

Lets not forget this is something that has a target audience of people ranging 10 - 60 years old, men and women. This is about a shirt to sell and be worn by the users of this site. There were lots of GOOD designs but the 1rst place was the best choice for a compromise of practicality and design. Congrats!!

Tim's should have won because it was popular. The winning shirt might look cool when all of three people buy it as I expect they will but Tim's represented a real message.  Congratulations Winners ! Smile You've won some good prizes. I will not be buying these shirts however, I think they're are many other shirts that I like a lot more and YES favourites should be part of the process yes cubicus you have a point but I'm sure they would have not allowed them to win. Pinkbike for future help I do would say there should be about 50 picked and US USERS pick them because we will be the advertisers buying these shirts. I am disappointed in the process and the choices of winners which doesn't matter now they are chosen and the contest is over but here are some honourable mentions I think we're good designs and I, personally would buy.

Funny that they would say the standard blew them away, I thought the standard was actually quite terrible. A lot of the original entries were crap, to the point of being hilarious. Obviously we have a lot of young users on here, so its fair enough they wanted to enter but pixelated clip art isnt what I would call creative...

Bitter because I didnt win? Yep, but a fair assessment I think.

You have got to be kidding me - the general level was far below crap. There were maybe 10 well executed designs out of the thousands of entries. Yup, this is sour grapes. But by looking at the "top" finalists it seems that the winning criterial were not based on good design, but catering to the poor taste of the judges. Maybe it would have been better to take another day to decide rather than making a blurry-eyed judgement at 2am...

As for second place, it took me a min to figure out what was going on and I didn't like the "rock out" scribbled on there. Reminded me of a first graders work. As for the third place one, i'm totally turned off. The dude looks like an idiot. Sorta disapointed by the results of this contest.  What really makes me laugh is there isn't one design with the color pink in it in the top picks. You could really do a lot with that color, especially with the name of this site being pinkbike. The judges probably don't have any design background, which is why they are just going to pick what they like. But as far as the t shirt representing this company...I think some better designs could have been created, none of those shirts match today's trends, that's the bottom line.

The design that got first place is decent, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near a good design. I would have done a LOT different with the fonts, especially with the options you have in illustrator or corel draw...if you have an eye for good design.

Obviously you know nothing about actual copyright laws.... the LAW states: "Copyright law is quite explicit that the making of what are called "derivative works" (works based or derived from another copyrighted work) is the exclusive province of the owner of the original work." Both those designs use derivative works that are exact (or almost near exact) replicas of the copyright holders work.

Therefore, it is 100% copyright infringement and owners of these copyrighted works have every right under the law to pursue these infringements.
  • - 2
flag rawf85 (Nov 3, 2010 at 17:43)
I guess is not that simple... If they are going to court, the original work (That one the guy used to base his artwork on) MUST be registered, otherwise will be only copyright infringement if he uses exactly or in some clear way, the same image as the original. But if he take some artwork, uses some piece of it to create something else, in a way that is different from the original, I believe (but I am no lawyer) its free of any charge; its like a collage, and we see it almost everywhere.

Here is a link with some legal basics about copyright laws: http://www.templetons.com/brad/copyright.html

If there is any user with some REAL law knowledge please enlight us, as I said before, I am no lawyer and I know just a little about copyright laws but I am well intended to hear about it. Its a very delicated issue, and I wouldnt like to discuss it with some rebel teenager.

btw... according to "derivative works", as you say, your design http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5771561/ is also an infringement of the copyrights of the poster Shepard Fairey designed.

flag spoked-media (Nov 3, 2010 at 18:06)
So you’re saying "If it doesn't have a copyright notice, it's not copyrighted." "This was true in the past, but today almost all major nations follow the Berne copyright convention. For example, in the USA, almost everything created privately and originally after April 1, 1989 is copyrighted and protected whether it has a notice or not." (Quoted from the link you provided me above) Maybe you should read that a bit of that before you commented.

Also your example for my design is not valid because I never used any original copyrighted material... "Design style", which you are talking about, is NOT copywrited nor can it ever be. A good example is the coastal crew "multi-frame" video clip. Many people use that as a design style and while it looks similar, it cannot be copywrited.

I don’t really feel like having a pissing contest with you, so I will agree to disagree with you.

you are forgetting intellectual property. also general respect to those that worked hard hand drawing their designs. also the rule stating all entries should be original designs. copying someone else's image, copy writted or not, is not original.

flag mougetm (Nov 3, 2010 at 23:57)
It's hard to find the truth because laws aren't the same everywhere. In France we can use other artworks to create something new as an evolution. For example you can copy the joconde and make her looks nasty. Everybody will know you're not devinci but your artwork is still original.
It's the same when you use samples to create a song. Try to explain to daft punk that their work is not original because they mostly use samples...

that is known as appropriation. it is a grey area in art were you must tread lightly. for example: Banksys appropriation of the mona lisa is obviously the mona lisa but she has on headphones and is brandishing a rocket launcher. that is original. but flipping and thresh-holding someone else's art work (in this case photography) i see not as appropriation but a blatant violation of the rules of the comp (original art work) and also intellectual property. i would be heaps pissed if someone used an image of mine in such blatant plagiarism.

Rawf85 clearly does not understand anything about artistry otherwise he would understand the ideals that are respected in the creative arts community on appropriation.

well, he didnt actually just flipped the image... I understand that is simply wrong... But Flexxo1982 had some artwork done based on a photo... so its the same MMMMMM did... he based his artwork in some famous poster... for me its the same thing - thats why I asked for some lawyer, its a complicated issue...

to be honest guys i dont really think pinkbike are that bothered. at the end of the day the pictures came from pinkbikes users. if they were from a professional advert then it would be a bit different. they could have quite easily used stock images to make their artwork! but lets face it, its expensive and it was a small competition.

on another note i do hate it when people squash and stretch text. like in the winning design.

 Congrats to the top 3.

I think a big part of what was chosen, was how much it would cost to print some of the designs, or how flexible the design is.

For example, the "Freeride Clinic" shirt is ILL, but what about the design would you have to change to change the shirt colour? Or the "For those about to Ride" shirt: the overlay of colours probably posed a challenge to print.

Anyway, just my guesses, but well done peeps!

When you see a group of people get out of the truck wearing this shirt, the first thing you see is a pink bike standing out from the crowd of others. Congrats to the winners though, wish I wouldn't have seen this post so late and had some time to throw some designs around. It's what I do for a living. =)
