SIXC: THE WORLD'S LIGHTEST DH RACE CRANK?

Building on the success of their proprietary Canadian carbon manufacturing program, Race Face has made some impressive expansions to the SIXC line of cranks for 2012. The addition of an 83mm spindle, 165mm length and removable granny spider make the 2012 SIXC a formidable DH race option coming in at a scant 650g (165mm, 83mm, 36T ring, including Turbine BB). This is a full 100g lighter than any other full carbon DH crank that we know of.

Using Race Face's propriety optimized carbon technology, the SIXC crankset is completely hollow, with all unnecessary material removed from the centre core. The composite arms are 100% carbon with no internal aluminum spine. Here's a look at the guts of a SIXC crank, or rather no guts, just hollow carbon goodness.

SIXC features a specifically engineered, superlight, CNC machined CrMo spindle that directly moulded into the drive side crank arm to minimize weight and maximize power transfer. 3mm of chainline adjustability ensures the ability to achieve perfect drivetrain alignment even with difficult suspension frame designs and is ideal for fine-tuning shifting chainguide set-ups.

This is the lightest, mass produced DH crank that is will be readily available worldwide. Admittedly there may be smaller boutique companies making products that are light and claimed to be at a DH strength, but we would love to see if that crank you point out would pass all the testing standards that the SIXC crank passes in our in-house testing.

WOW!!! good old clavavacalavs ??!?? lol... Race Face are guaranteed to be 1000 times stronger. I made carbon cranks too ya know, with old seat posts, ducked tape and crazy glue. They weight in at 237g.

if your bb broke after 10 rides it probably wasn't installed properly, though it could have been a manufacturer defect too. Did you get in touch with the RF warranty guys, or talk to the shop you got the cranks at? they are pretty helpful and thats really where the company shines by still being in canada.

Gurdip- All Race Face BB's do come with a 1 year term of warranty, so definitely take yours back to your dealer and we can sort you out with a new one. In 2010 we revamped our BB's and bearings; the reliability, performance, and overall lifespan of the BB has improved drastically since the changes. Thanks for riding Race Face!!

RaceFace is back in a BIG way. I have owned the Carbon Sixc Cranks for a season and thrown everything at them. Two intense weeks in the Whistler bike park, rocky downhill sessions in Hawaii, and miles and miles of All MTN riding with roots, rocks and plenty of knar and they have performed flawlessly! They are super light, farken stiff as hell and look cool as shit. These cranks are the beez neez! The DH cranks should be the same...Go RaceFace!!

Love everything I saw, except for the fact that they ditched the shore trail map graphics for their atlas stuff. Obviously this is purely aesthetics and in no way affects how they'll perform, but it was always my favourite thing about my atlas bars/cranks.

The crank shown is the Stealth color - which along with the new 'Raw' finish will have different graphics that the other available Atlas colors. The new graphic samples came in to late to have 'pro' pictures taken so that is why the Stealth crank is shown....this is also true of the new Atlas bars - new graphic on all colors except the Stealth bar (pictured above) will have its own look. The new graphic on ATLAS will still have the 'Topo theme to it - proper images of the new Atlas line will be out in the next day or too.....Sorry for the confusion Smile

The Stealth finish looks great (I have a pair of Atlas Stealth bars on my Wilson), but sadly it seems to scratch/wear off fairly easily compared to the finish on my previous bars. Still great bars though, perfect geo and really light. Smile

I'm impressed Race Face. All you need to do now is get rid of the shim system for preloading the bottom bracket bearings and go with a system that does not require taking the cranks on and off to get it just right. That issue aside, great work on the new line, really digging it.

I bought my first Race Face product back in 98! I'm rooting for the new Race Face. I just hope they don't get all sideways trying to make everything under the sun. Focus on core competencies first. Does the market really need women's free ride apparel from Race Face? Maybe those resources could go to men's apparel for starters.

RF Atlas, re comments on coming loose what BS Ive run Atlas since the day they became available Ive had deus on my trail bikes and AM bikes and now running it on my single speed, thats 3 bikes that crank has been on, I had Diablous same interface on my old Dh bike and that cranks could smash mountains it was so strong too strong in fact and too stiff if that is possible. Ive had Atlas FRs 165s since on 09 and now on my current DH bike and Iv never had one come loose, or had a damaged spindle interface. Its installation and setup that munt the cranks. They aren't the easiest to mount maybe but not hard either, just a few more knowledgeable patient minutes and you're done.

Shimano type crank interfaces you could probably do when your drunk, Atlas interface best put together when sober the key difference

As well as the THM Carbones Clavicula cranks there are also other ultralight options such as the Lightning Carbon Cranks. I really wish we could get a few of these incredibly expensive little bits of carbon and do a proper comparison over time.

atlas is aimed more towards freeriders/dirt jumpers who would rather take the little weight penalty and have the strength. that being said, i am NOT saying that those carbon cranks are not as strong. that, and im sure costs will be wanted to be kept down.

The ATLAS keeps the non drive side spindle so we can maintain the larger chainline adjustabiltly options that the older Atlas FR crank had. This chainline adjustment option makes it a lot easier when setting up chainguides.

EXI is the interface that has been used on RaceFace XC like the Next, Deus (after 200 Cool

and Evolve (after 200 Cool

. It is an external bearing , 2 piece crank system the uses splines based on ISIS design. It is extremely durable, user friendly for install and service, plus it is lighter than the interface that its replacing on the ATLAS.

Yes the EXI system is different from X-Type. The production samples of the new Atlas cranks, bars and direct mount stems (all with new graphics as week) came in to late to get photoed for this article. So we went with the Stealth images for the crank and bar - as the Stealth graphic is the same going forward. Proper and current images of the new Atlas line will be out in the next day or two.....Sorry for the confusion. Smile

CarlosMC - The Khyber Woman's knee pad was designed specifically for women by getting a lot of feedback from women riders and by looking at statistical differences between the general dimensions of male and females legs and knees. Race Face is producing fome mighty fine bike parts! However they will not recive any of my hard earned $$$ due to thier business ethics(i.e. big sponserships then bankrupting a couple weeks later)!

They didn't bankrupt. They was something like tax evasion or fraud. They basically lied about how much was made that year and years prior. And that was why the head guy is gone, and the remaining people got it back, and still have jobs.

Actually they did go bankrupt, and the company was purchased by Chris Tutton who used to be VP of Race Face before going to work for Easton. So business ethics have nothing to do with it. Basically it's a completely new company with a bunch of the same employees, making the same parts and some new ones....

No, but that was a completely different company than the Race Face that exists now. This company has completely different ethics than the last one.

Will the same employees make the same false promises? They may have a new owner but who is to say that they have new ethics?

rubbman - the old owner basically brought the companies to its knees with fraud and decisions that only he can explain why he made them (notice how careful I am in saying this). He even screwed the old employees. So I can definitely understand your skepticism.

Knowing the people at RaceFace now I would have to say that they are to be trusted - but then that's just my opinion and you can choose to either tar RaceFace with the same brush as the old owner. Or you can approach the "new" RaceFace as a company that should be judged on the best of what it did in the past and what it could achieve, in the future.

Thank you for the added insight! I will now think about product quality over business ethics! I just hope that the new raceface is a stand up company(otherwise straightline will get most of my $$)!
