Following on the heels of the highly acclaimed, new series The Edge Factor Show, the EF team is set to release the Reality Redesigned series. What is it? It is a design contest with a reality show twist. Students and bike enthusiasts from around North America will be invited to submit designs into one of three categories based on the theme of the show, in this case 'Mountain Bikes'. The submissions will be analysed and eventually critiqued by industry experts.

Jeremy Bout, host and producer of the Edge Factor, will take us coast to coast, introducing this seasons Judges. Once all the submissions are in and screened, the show will track the top drawings as the judges critique them. The ever present POV camera will capture the process from beginning to end, allowing the audience a unique opportunity to watch the idea go from drawing board to finished product.

DESIGN CATEGORIES

Reality Redesigned is a whole new concept . The first season closely follows the relationship between the mountain biking and manufacturing industry. Teaming up with Pinkbike, the EF team is presenting three categories for the mountain bike design contest: frame, suspension and components. Contestants will pick one, and submit their design idea in that category.

The submissions will be taken through a rigorous screening process. The better the idea, the clearer the presentation, the more points it will get. The more points you get, the better your chances will be that you will make the top spot on the leader board. When the dust settles, after all submissions are in and all the prints have been screened...we will then see who is at the top. Top 3 in each of the categories will make up the “Final Nine” in March 2012.

The general public audience will be able to vote on their favourite designs and the submission that stay on the leaderboard with the most “yes” votes at the end of January and the end of February will win a pimped out Intense bike.

Submissions for the contest will close at the end of February and then the real fun begins... Judges will work through these nine submissions, assigning point values to each of the finalists. This is an amazing opportunity for students and aspiring designers to have their designs and ideas looked at by the top minds in the industry today and being used by the top bikers in the world. Reality Redesigned promises to be a season filled with key insights into the amazing world of design, engineering and manufacturing.

REALITY REDESIGNED JUDGES:

Marie Planchard: Mechanical Engineer
Marie is the Director of World Education for Solidworks, the leader in 3D CAD software. Having been a judge in competitions around the world, Marie is equipped to give valuable insights to this seasons contestants.

Dave Mee: Engineer, MTB Rider
Dave is an engineer for 3D Systems, a world leader in 3D printers for rapid prototyping. Dave will use the latest in this technology to bring the “Final Nine” into physical 3D models.

Mike Montgomery: Pro MTB Rider
Mike will receive the 3D models from 3D Systems and will analyze them from an industry standpoint. Based on his incredible experience in the field, Mike will award points based on ride-ability and usability.

JoAnn Mitchell: Senior Project Leader at Sandvik Coromant
With over 300 patented products a year, Sandvik Coromant, is one of the largest cutting tool manufacturers in the world. JoAnn will look at the submissions and judge them based on the steps the student provides for their project.

Jeff Steber: Owner, Intense Cycles
Jeff is the founder, president, dreamer and innovator for Intense, a 20 year old stronghold in the bike frame industry. Jeff will concentrate his considerable experience on the top 3 finalists in the MTB Frame category.

Josh Coaplen: Director of Research and Development at Cane Creek Cycling.
Cane Creek is an innovator in the mountain biking industry from wheels on up to seat-posts. Josh will be looking at and scoring the MTB Suspension Category.

Dennis and DJ Paulson: Owners, Straitline Precision.
Straitline is becoming known as a leader in innovative bike part designs and manufacturing, featured in the “Gnarly Metal” episode of The Edge Factor Show. The brothers will judge the parts and designs submitted in the MTB Components category.

PRE-SCREENING/JUDGING CRITERIA

Form
The shape, size, dimensions, and/or other visual parameters which uniquely characterize the submission. This defines the "look" of the part or item. The clearer the presentation the higher the points given.

Fit
The ability of an item to physically interface or interconnect with or become an integral part of another item or assembly. In other words, if your design has a few parts that need to work together, be clear how they function together. Be sure to include how this design will interact when mounted on the Mountainbike.

Function
The action[s] that an item is designed to perform. This is the reason for the item's existence.

Wait let me get this right. You give your best idea away that could be possibly be worth millions of dollars to a bike company. They get the idea patented and all you get is a free bike. I'm hoping that the company that gets your idea will at least give the winner some royalties if the product takes off.

ye but u get a free bike

flag ShastaOutdoorMedia (Nov 21, 2011 at 14:24)
Yup. Just another way for them to exploit you...if you actually have a good idea, then patent it yourself. Oh wait you can't because you don't have enough money. Economic dictatorship.

He says the top spot gets over $20,000, sounds pretty good to me.

If you don't want to give away your idea then no-ones forcing you to... develop it and take it onto dragons den, or start your own company and put it into production, or keep it in a sketch book in a cupboard in your house gathering dust... This is a great opportunity to get something you've designed made, and put into production, probably gain a load of experience and work with some cool people in the industry.

I think this is a good idea for an Engineer,Industrial Designer, or anyone to get their foot in the door at any bike company and probably get a great job if you have one of the top ideas. I guess what sounds better to me if you give them one of your good ideas and not the best one for this contest. Then if you get a job from this and get sick of the 9-5 grind. I would pursue getting your best idea patented and working for yourself or with a good friend. I know its a big risk but in the end it is much more fulfilling.

Great idea for a contest, I hope someone comes up with something simple but effective.
@kbc258, as a design/development engineer, I ride for the love, I design so I can afford the love and to not think about design...

flag kbc258 (Nov 21, 2011 at 15:39)
Yeah, I think everyone here rides because they love it. When I design I try and think of things that can make riding more fun (If that is even possible) and to further what can be done on a mountain bike. This can be from making a current component simpler and easier to use all the way up to using materials and technology that has never even been thought of in the mountain biking world. In the end hopefully this adds up to people enjoying mountain biking even more than they thought possible.

 Hey guys, Jeremy here.
We are only announcing the details on the categories now because we do not want anyone to submit or expose their ideas til they have read the terms.
The full details will be up at the same time as submissions can be posted. No company is going to have any stake in contest. It is important to know: All intellectual property is retained by the student that submits the design. In fact, all participating companies had to agree to these terms before we would let them participate.

This series / contest is all about the bringing the process to life. A great design is only a small part of bringing a new product to life...And that is what we hope to focus on in this series.

We have one of the leading patent lawyer coming on camera to teach our audience how to protect their intellectual property, coaching them on the hows and whys of the patent process. Stay tuned, this is all just getting started. Go to http://www.Edgefactor.com for some additional details. - Jeremy

Thanks for clearing up some of the contest details. This is great to hear that the intellectual property will stay with the designer. Also having a patent lawyer talk about how to protect intellectual property is a good idea.

flag perrin243 (Nov 22, 2011 at 11:38)
Correct me if I'm wrong but submitting an idea to a huge international contest would be considered "public disclosure" no? Thereby eliminating the option of the product being patented.

flag bikesonsnow (Nov 22, 2011 at 20:31)
In the US, we have one year from the first public disclosure to file for a patent.

To the people concerned about the fact that companies my make tons of dough off their ideas. You don't have to dough to get your products off the ground anyway, and making a good enough project is enough to get you to the top of the manufacturing pack.

I think it's funny how people who have zero experience in design/manufacturing think they will be giving away their million $ idea. This is for fun. Million dollar ideas come after years of work and experience in the industry, -ask Shimano.

Anyway, CAN WE WORK IN TEAMS? ie: designer + engineer.
because I have all the style but a friend has all the brains. Frown

Didn't mean to - prop Cuban-b damn iPhone! I think the contest is a great opportunity and we may see some amazing designs but Straitline's comments reassured me that I won't be purchasing any of their products even if it's the thoughts of a single employee your representing the entire brand. A nationally syndicated show could have done wonders for the mountain bike industry and the designers/engineers alike. Thanks for keeping it real though...bla bla bla

Well my idea fits into all 3 catagories as in order to fit sealed drive design on full sus frame frame needs slight modifications to get gearing to work in low profile setting and suspension will cause own problems, plus low profile Derailluar type gearing needs worked on any way. So this design has whole package! if want to know what could look like just Google SEALED BIKE DRIVE SYSTEM let me know that you think.?

Guys, I am guessing that they probably ran into some legal issues which limited them to North America. It does not mean that you won't be able to participate, just that you can't submit a design. Either way, I think it's a cool concept and people should do what ever they can to join in and hopefully next year they can make it global.

Actually Dave is behind this concept and is frustrated with how the consumer assumes it all falls from a tree. This is "us" Industry giving you a chance to try being us. If you think millions will come from a design here is your chance to see our world.

Do not diss this release, it is your chance to learn, we are colliding worlds here. Pinkbike is bringing you all of this to engage you and we are bringing it to educate you on how it all works in real life.

Edgefactor and Straitline had the option to syndicate the show on The Discovery Channel but refused that offer for a educational angle.

So go with it and reserve complaining for the other releases and choose not to learn. We know there are Millions of pinkbike thinkers reading this, 78% just reserve themselves not to respond!

This will not come around twice.

flag cuban-b (Nov 22, 2011 at 14:31)
@Straitline: schilly is complimenting Dave Weagle and his superior talent for design, not disparaging (or "dissing" as you so eloquently put it) the contest. Please defer to a public relations employee on subsequent posts - it will make you look less defensive and misinformed. You also forgot that you represent your entire brand.

@schilly: Agreed, and apparently Straitline did not see the subtle humour in your post, whilst simultaneously showing pinkbike their slight narcissistic side with references to "us" (inudstry leaders) and "you" (customers/consumers).

As if Straitline is so much above and better than the average consumer, who should "reserve complaining for the other releases and choose not to learn". Please... how cheeky of you guys. Facepalm
